Alex Collie

PHD, CF, Professor

Professor Alex Collie is Director of the Healthy Working Lives Research Group and Co-Director of the Division of Health Services Systems and Policy, in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine. He is an Australian Research Council Future Fellow (2020 to 2024) and a Churchill Fellow.
Alex is an applied public health and social policy researcher. His research focuses on work disability benefit and personal injury compensation systems and their impact on the work, social and health outcomes of injured and ill people.

His research career has been at the border of academia, government and industry. He has moved between these settings but maintained a focus on developing and using evidence to support decision making, develop policy and implement programs to improve health, work and social outcomes.

Alex currently leads mulitple large projects funded by industry, government and competitive research grants. Alex has advised multiple state and commonwealth government departments and private sector organisations in matters relating to workplace health, insurance and injury compensation. He has a PhD in psychology. He has published more than 220 peer reviewed journal articles, book chapters and technical reports.

Etienne Minvielle

MD, PhD, Professor

Etienne Minvielle is CNRS Research Director and Professor at Ecole Polytechnique (i3-Center for Management Research; UMR CNRS 9217, Institut Polytechnique de Paris, of which he is the director since October 2022).

He is also a doctor attached to Gustave Roussy. Doctor (former public health intern), he is a graduate of ESSEC, and holds a doctorate in management (Ecole Polytechnique). His research focuses on the organization of the healthcare system (patient pathway and personalization; role of digital; management of the unknown; quality and performance management) and has been published in the most recognized journals in the field. (Nature Medicine, Social Science and Medicine, Public Administration Review, The BMJ).

He recently published " The Patient and the Système" (Ed. Seli Arslan, 2018) and "Journey to the Heart of the Health System, 100 testimonials to learn how to manage with the crisis" (Ed Eska, 2021). He is co-holder of the Sanofi-Ecole Polytechnique Chair on digital health. Finally, he is a member of various scientific councils and orientations (HAS, Université Paris Cité, Ramsay-GDS) and received the Special Prize for the Public Action of the Year 2016 (National Assembly).

Frederieke Schaafsma

MD, Professor

Prof. F.G. Schaafsma is an endowed professor in occupational medicine at the Amsterdam University Medical Center. She is a practicing occupational health physician and director of the outpatient clinic occupational medicine (Polikliniek Mens & Arbeid) at the Department of Public and Occupational Health, Amsterdam University Medical Center. Her research focuses on recognizing and tackling early signs of illness and long-term absenteeism among workers.

She wishes to
1) contribute to mechanistic and epidemiological knowledge about the influence of the working environment on the health of workers, taking into account the influence from the private or living environment of the present and the past.

2) contribute to knowledge about effective preventive interventions aimed at preserving work among workers with serious health problems. These interventions can be aimed at strengthening the work capacity of the worker in collaboration with the curative sector, or at temporarily or permanently adjusting the workload or work environment in collaboration with the workplace.

Jan Hoving

PhD

Dr Hoving is principal investigator at the Amsterdam University Medical Center, at the Department of Public and Occupational Health, and part of the Research Center for Insurance Medicine (www.kcvg.nl).

He is interested in evidence synthesis and from Amsterdam he leads the Cochrane Work review group (https://work.cochrane.org)  and contributes to the Cochrane Insurance Medicine field (https://insuremed.cochrane.org/).
He is interested in international collaboration and methodology development in occupational health and insurance medicine. Together with international experts he has been leading the development of a Core Outcome Set for Work (www.cosforwork.org).

Recently, he has been successful, together with Basel University, in applying to become a Cochrane ‘Work & Health & Social Security’ thematic group in 2023. At present, Jan is seeking collaboration with researchers and institutions to support the production and implementation of evidence in occupational safety and health as part of the ‘Global Alliance for Evidence in OSH’: www.evidenceforwork.org).

Lene Aasdahl

MD, PHD 

Lene Aasdahl is an associate professor at the Department of Public Health and Nursing at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). She is a physician with specialization in physical medicine and rehabilitation and holds a part time position at Unicare Helsefort Rehabilitation center.

Her research focuses on sick leave and she has been involved in several projects evaluating different interventions designed to increase return to work. She leads a research group called Work and Health, and her PhD was on the effects of occupational rehabilitation. She teaches on topics like public health, work and health.

Mika Kivimaki

Professor

Professor Mika Kivimaki, FMedSci, is an epidemiologist at University College London (UCL), UK and University of Helsinki, Finland.
He leads the prestigious Whitehall II study, an on-going epidemiological cohort study of 10,000 UK men and women, and several research consortia, including the IPD-Work consortium of 17 European cohort studies. His studies have been used as evidence for a number of prevention guidelines and policy documents. Kivimaki is an ISI Highly Cited Researcher.

Petra Došenović Bonča

PHD, Associate Professor

Petra Došenović Bonča, PhD, is an associate professor at the School of Economics and Business, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Her research fields are health economics and public economics. Her current research focuses on efficiency and performance of health care providers in Slovenia and on innovations as factors of efficiency and performance.

She is currently a member of the Statistical Advisory Committee for Health at the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia. She has published several papers analysing and assessing the Slovenia’s health care system and policy initiatives related to this sector.

She has also participated in reform efforts and has been involved in consultancy projects for hospitals in Slovenia. She has participated in the development of the first postgraduate degree programme in Health Economics and Management offered in Slovenia. Since 2017, she is the head of this programme and currently teaches courses Principles of health economics, Health systems and policies, Economic evaluation in health care and Health insurance.

Philippe Coucke

MD, Professor

Prof. Coucke accomplished his medical degree at the State University of Ghent Belgium in 1984. He has been trained in radiation oncology at Ghent University Hospital  and University Hospital of Besançon in France.

He became senior member of the staff & «Maître d’Enseignement et de Recherche» at the University Hospital in Lausanne (CHUV), Switzerland.

In 2005 he became head of the Department of Radiotherapy at Hôpital Maisonneuve Rosemont, Montreal Canada. He was appointed as clinical professor at the University of Montreal, Qc, Ca.

In 2006, he became head of the Department of Radiotherapy  and Professor of Radiation Therapy at the University Hospital in Liège.

His interest is focused on breast cancer, automatization of contouring in treatment planning, dynamic tumour tracking, evaluation of patient’s experience (inclusive connected health for continuous monitoring of physiological parameters) and quality management.

He has been granted 5 times by MWQ  for the application of the EFQM excellence model (European Foundation for Quality Management) in his department.

More recently, he focuses his attention to “connected health”, evaluation of health literacy of patients, patient empowerment, social determinants of health and the potential of big data and artificial intelligence, all leading to radical (disruptive) changes in the health care sector.

He has been invited as a keynote speaker in more than 150 conferences since January 2016 on the subject of disruptive changes in medical care, due to accelerating technology. In 2017, he was also invited by the Belgian Senate and the European Council to share his vision on the future of medicine.

Reinhard Busse

MD, PHD, Professor

Professor Reinhard Busse, Dr. med. MPH, is department head for health care management in the Faculty of Economics and Management at Technische Universität Berlin, Germany. He is also Co-Director of the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies. His research focuses on methods and contents of comparative health system analysis and performance assessment, health services research (with emphasis on hospitals, human resources, financing and payment mechanisms), health economics and health technology assessment (HTA).

He is editor-in-chief of Health Policy (since 2011) and director of the Federal Ministry of Research-funded Berlin Centre of Health Economics Research (since 2012). He was speaker of the board of the inter-university Berlin School of Public Health (2015-2018), President of the German Health Economics Association (2016/17) and member of the Government Commission for Modern and Needs-based Hospital Care (since 2022). His department is supporting the School of Public Health in Kumasi, Ghana, in setting up a master's program in Health Systems' Research and Management.
